Career Connections is a great opportunity for middle school students to explore some of the exciting hands-on education experiences offered at Great Plains Technology Center.

Students: For students entering
6th , 7th, and 8th  grade
in the upcoming
2026-2027 school year.
   

 

Registration is Closed

Students may participate in morning and afternoon sessions. Class curriculum is identical in each session, therefore, students may NOT repeat the same class.

Lunch and T-Shirt included. Students may also bring their lunch.

Note: If a child comes to camp both weeks, they will only receive one t-shirt.

Class Descriptions

3D Animation:
Come get animated! Or rather, come and get animating, as we teach you the basics steps to create your own 3D assets and animations from start to finish that you can show off to your friends and family!

Biomedical Explorations - Week 1 Only:
Learn how body systems work and operate together by exploring the inner workings of the skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive systems. As anatomy explorers we’ll take a look inside each with microscopes, dissections, and interactive games that literally allow us to be a fly on the wall watching the processes take place.

Basic IT Desktop Repair- Week 2 ONLY:
This class introduces students to the basics of IT desktop repair in a fun, hands-on way. Students will learn how computers work, identify common parts like keyboards, mice, and monitors, and practice simple troubleshooting skills. Through guided activities, they’ll safely explore how to fix basic problems, understand proper care of technology, and build confidence using computers. This course encourages curiosity, building, repair, problem-solving, and early interest in technology careers.

Carpentry:
Nailed It! Do you want hands-on experience designing and building different projects? Come learn the basics of carpentry and woodworking and create your own take-home designs!

Codebreaker Academy: Intro to Cyber Security - Week 1 ONLY:
Students step into the role of a cybersecurity analyst by solving ciphers, cracking simple codes, and uncovering hidden messages. This class builds problem-solving skills while introducing foundational security concepts.

Computer Information Technology - Week 1 ONLY:
This Computer Information Technology class introduces students to the exciting world of computers through fun, hands-on activities. Students will explore basic computer parts, learn simple troubleshooting skills, practice safe technology use, and build problem-solving abilities. Through games, challenges, and creative projects, the class encourages curiosity and helps students develop confidence with technology while sparking interest in future IT careers.

Cosmetology:
Welcome to Cosmetology, an exciting program designed for individuals looking to explore the vibrant world of beauty and self-expression! Whether you're dreaming of becoming a professional makeup artist, hairstylist, or nail technician, this program offers an inspiring introduction to key cosmetology skills. You'll get hands-on experience and learn techniques that allow you to transform creativity into art! Explore the art of color application by learning to apply hair color and painting with color theory. Unleash your creativity with styling and braiding, designing stunning looks for special events or fun personal expression. Finally, dive into the world of nail art, where you'll learn to create intricate designs using polish, gems, and accessories for unique, eye-catching styles.

Culinary - Waffle Lot of Fun- Week 1 ONLY
Start your day the delicious way! In this hands-on camp, students will learn to create breakfast favorites while building basic kitchen skills and confidence!
 
Culinary - Sauces of the World - Week 2 ONLY

Take your taste buds on a trip around the world! In this hands-on camp, students will explore and create a variety of sauces from different cultures while learning basic cooking skills and flavor combinations.

Engineering Skills:
Students will discuss and employ the engineering design cycle, practice communication, and teamwork skills. Students will practice problem-solving skills, demonstrate an understanding of principles underlying the design of structures, demonstrate an understanding of scientific principles, and improve mathematical skills.
 
Moviemaking:
Become immersed in the wonderful world of movie making, where students will learn how to write, film, and edit their very own short film using industry standard cameras and editing software.

Photography:
Learn how to operate an industry level camera in complete manual mode. When students leave this class, they will know exactly how a camera works, what every button does, and will never have to use preset modes again.

Vex Robotics - Week 2 Only:
Students will use the VEX5 robotics platform to build and block program a unit designed to complete a given challenge. Given a challenge and basic information, students will be taught problem solving methods for design. Beginning by building a chassis, students will understand why a stable structure is necessary to provide physical support.  Next, we will build an understanding of speed and torque before mounting motors, wheels, and gears to complete the drive system on our chassis.  We will conclude the week with a fully functioning robot that we have programmed to overcome obstacles and defeat challenges at our command. Finally, we will use a block program to create a command center that can control our robots and test our ability to overcome given challenges and obstacles. Students will have several opportunities for informal science learning, as well as leadership and problem-solving training through work teams and recreational activities. 

Wire It Right: Ethernet Cable Building (T568A & T568B) Week 2 ONLY:
Students learn how to build real Ethernet cables using T568A and T568B wiring standards and how to identify, differentiate, and understand the differences between them. They will strip, arrange, and crimp cables by hand, then test them for proper functionality using cable testers—just like real network technicians.
