Description
The Paramedic Program at Great Plains Technology Center prepares students to become advanced providers of emergency medical care. Building on their foundational training as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), students develop a deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology, cardiology, pharmacology, and medical procedures. The curriculum emphasizes advanced skills such as patient assessment, medication administration, intravenous therapy, advanced airway management, and the resuscitation and stabilization of patients experiencing life-threatening emergencies, including heart attacks and traumatic injuries. The course introduces students to the professional roles and responsibilities of a paramedic, including legal and ethical considerations in emergency medical services. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on simulation, students will master core concepts in pathophysiology, pharmacology, trauma care, cardiology, and advanced medical interventions.
Clinical training is conducted at a variety of healthcare facilities, where students gain experience through direct patient contact in environments such as operating rooms, emergency departments, critical care units, and onboard ambulances alongside licensed paramedics. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to challenge the National Registry Examination for Paramedics. Those who pass the examination may apply for licensure in the State of Oklahoma. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Professions (CoAEMSP).
