Foundations of Auto Mechanics

This course introduces students to the theory of engine operation and the essential systems found in today’s vehicles. Topics include engine components and materials, fuel and ignition systems, starter and charging systems, exhaust and air intake systems, filters, lubrication and cooling systems, and basic automotive electrical concepts including AC and DC electricity. Students will gain hands-on experience using basic hand tools and precision measuring tools while learning shop safety and practical applications of basic shop math, including engine clearances and standard-to-metric conversions. The course will also explore the differences between economy and higher-quality replacement parts. While designed as an entry-level course, this class provides an in-depth look at engine internals and foundational automotive principles.
